Our large and dynamic group of clinicians, educators and researchers is dedicated to delivering the highest quality care, while continually pushing the boundaries of knowledge.
Who we are
An integral part of Northwell Health, our internists partner with specialists to expertly serve a wide variety of patients, providing routine and preventive care, consultative services for complex medical conditions and help managing chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Our goal is to achieve the best possible treatment outcomes and ensure patient satisfaction.
And clinical care is just part of what makes us strong. We also focus on driving the field forward through world-class education and research—because innovation is at the heart of everything we do.
From the chair
Welcome. Northwell is one of the nation’s largest integrated healthcare systems, with 23 hospitals and 650 outpatient facilities providing care for more than two million people annually in the metro New York area and beyond. We are New York state’s largest private employer—our 66,000 employees include more than 15,000 nurses and 4,000 physicians, including more than 3,000 members of Northwell Health Physician Partners in freestanding practices.
The Department of Medicine is Northwell’s largest department, with more than 1,000 salaried physicians and faculty providing care for individuals, training and education for hundreds of students, residents and fellows, and groundbreaking research that makes a difference today.
Of course, “biggest” doesn’t always mean “best”. At Northwell, though, our deep roots in the communities we have been serving for decades provide an ideal grounding and balance for the power of our size. This unique juxtaposition of tradition with the state-of-the-art creates an energy that I’ve never seen elsewhere. The many significant benefits of scale include remarkable diversity in patient population, case settings and disease entities. Experts, thought leaders and rising stars are attracted to this ideal setting for learning and breaking new ground in clinical care, research and education.
As the mainstage of healthcare continues to shift from inpatient to outpatient, the Department maintains a strong focus on both primary care and specialty care. This includes a full commitment to the innovations of the patient-centered medical home, ensuring quality care as well as the stability and expertise that patients know and trust. Seamless transitions among care settings are a top priority as patients move more frequently among care levels and sites; this is supported by our long-term strategy of integrating the continuum of services as our foundation, rather than an afterthought.
Our visionary medical school elevates the content and perspective of all our work, especially educating the next generations of healthcare providers. Physicians of today and tomorrow need different skills and attitudes than those provided by education and training to my father and even to me—a challenge the Department of Medicine takes on with great success. Our residency in internal medicine is among the largest in the nation, and we offer all the standard subspecialty fellowships.
The Department of Medicine’s thriving research enterprise is a top priority for students and trainees, as well as faculty. The Center for Health Innovation and Outcomes Research (CHIOR) puts to work technology, big data and creative new ways of thinking about healthcare outcomes to measure and improve healthcare delivery. A team of internationally renowned researchers and rising stars is housed in a cutting-edge, 20,000-square-foot, $15 million facility at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research.
Whatever the reason for your visit to the Department of Medicine website, please keep in mind that it can capture only a small fraction of the energy, commitment and skill that drive our work on a daily basis. Thank you.
