Residency in Physics at North Shore University Hospital & Long Island Jewish Medical Center (NS/LIJ)

The Department of Radiation Medicine at Northwell Health provides a wide range of radiation medicine services to adult and pediatric patients in the New York metropolitan area. We have seven locations, see over 2,800 consults per year and treat 250 patients daily. The department is nationally recognized for its evidence-based practices and excellent patient experience.

We use the latest technology and machinery, including Varian TrueBeam accelerators, Gamma Knife, TomoTherapy, ZEISS Intrabeam and CyberKnife. The department has a vigorous brachytherapy program including high-dose-rate and low-dose-rate prostate seed implant programs, microspheres, Xofigo, intro-operative treatment of breast and spine lesions, brain implants, and intravascular brachytherapy. A dedicated physics laboratory is maintained in the department, with dosimetric equipment calibrated traceably to National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) standards on a periodic basis.

Program details

The Residency in Physics at North Shore University Hospital & Long Island Jewish Medical Center, offered by the Department of Radiation Medicine, is a formal program under the Graduate Medical Education Division of the Office of Academic Affairs that began in 2012. Our program is designed to provide comprehensive clinical training and opportunities to engage in clinically directed research in any academic discipline that touches our field. Residents in the program will be prepared for board certification and subsequent clinical professional opportunities in radiation oncology.

The program received CAMPEP accreditation in 2014 and its curriculum is based on the guidelines by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP). The program duration is two years, commencing on July 1 of each year, with rotations and didactic training focused on building core technical and professional competencies as recommended by CAMPEP and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Residents have access to clinical facilities and equipment under supervision by board-certified physicists. They are required to complete all rotations and didactic requirements with a demonstration of satisfactory competencies, attendance, report submissions and performance on a comprehensive final examination through the course of the two-year program. 

All training needed for the residency program is accomplished at our new facility, the Center for Advanced Medicine (CFAM), located across the street and within walking distance from Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJ) in New Hyde Park, NY. All faculty members of the physics residency program are either located in CFAM or LIJ. 

Financial information

Effective July 1, 2019, the following funding levels are in effect for physics residents:

1st-year Physics Resident - $55,000
2nd-year Physics Resident - $58,000 

The salary will be subject to standard deductions for taxes and standard withholdings as required by law. In addition to direct compensation, physics residents are afforded standard benefits consistent with other hospital employees such as health, vision, dental, disability, life, and paid vacation (20 days). 

Residents are funded up to $2,000 per year for travel and $500 per year for books.

Rotations

Residents are required to complete 10 rotations under the guidance of supervising physicists and to complete regular examinations to monitor progress. A final comprehensive oral examination will be conducted at the end of the training period. 

The rotations are as follows:

  •  Radiotherapy equipment
  •  Measurement and calculation of dose
  •  Quality control and assurance
  •  Operations, QA and QC of imaging and ancillary equipment
  •  Patient set up, immobilization and monitoring
  •  Treatment planning – IMRT and 3D
  •  IGRT
  •  Brachytherapy
  •  Patient quality assurance

Program conferences & didactics

Residents participate in department conferences including quality management, informatics, WE CARE, Smart Rounds and Physics Journal Club, and provide physics support on approved activities within the clinic. 

Conference expenses will be covered by the department upon program director and department chair approval. Travel expenses may also be supported for additional major scientific meetings if a resident’s abstract submission has been selected for presentation.

Residents will attend the following conferences and didactics as part of the program:

Smart Rounds Daily Conference

  • 8am - 9am except on QM Days
  • Goal: to appreciate the concepts of multidisciplinary teamwork, evidence-based standardized medicine and peer review in the formulation of appropriate care pathways for patients toward enhancing professional competencies.

Paperless Fortnightly Conference

  • 2pm - 4pm, alternate Thursdays
  • Goal: to observe and participate in how operations in radiation medicine can be streamlined with the use of paperless processes within the context of an electronic medical record system.

Quality Management (QM) Monthly Conference

  • 8am - 9:30am, third Monday of each month
  • Goal: to appreciate how patient care is affected by all aspects of the department’s activities, and how the system’s approach must be considered while managing the quality of care patients receive.

Physics of Radiation Therapy Course

  • Weekly lectures
  • Goal: to sustain understanding of fundamental physics principles or radiation therapy.

Physics Journal Club

  • Monthly
  • Goal: to attend paper reviews by other physics staff members and present an article published in a medical physics journal within the last year.

Resident logs

All residents will maintain electronic logs, which will include:

  • Clinical rotations
  • Didactic sessions
  • Clinical procedures
  • Daily activities
  • All documentation uploaded on a weekly basis

Evaluations

Faculty evaluations of the resident will include weekly meetings with mentors, rotation exams, annual exams and a quarterly evaluation by the Program Director. Resident evaluation of the program and faculty will take place semiannually.
