Research in motion

In addition to excellence in education and patient care, a true academic health center must have clinical and basic research ongoing. With this in mind, several years ago North Shore University Hospital built the Boas-Marks Biomedical Science Research Center, now home to the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, and created a multi-disciplined Department of Research.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine has recently created a Research Committee to enhance the basic science and clinical research effort in our department. This committee reviews applications for research projects requiring funding and also maintains a list of ongoing projects in the department.

Every year residents submit abstracts to various committees and organizations, both at the national and international level. The program pays the cost of sending residents to present their work at these meetings. The volume of these abstracts is indicative of the commitment the program has towards helping house staff achieve excellence in their research projects. Residents who have approved research projects are given two days per month protected time during their core rotations to complete research projects. In addition, residents may also use elective time for research.

Projects run the gamut from case reports to clinicopathologic research utilizing immunohistochemical and molecular studies. Didactics are offered on how to conduct a research study and submit a protocol to the IRB. Mentors are readily available on site for collaboration and guidance.

We are fortunate to have the expertise of the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research on our campus. The institute houses more than 100 physician scientists who have conducted trials on over 115,000 patients. The institute is among the top six percent of the more than 3,400 institutions that receive National Institutes of Health funding each year. Faculty members in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine collaborate with research scientists at the Feinstein Institute. Courses are offered free of charge to all house staff.

The department covers expenses for the presentation of research. The educational travel/book allowances are:

Sliding scale for PGY1-4 per academic year:

  • PGY1 - $200 Book allowance
  • PGY 2 - $1000
  • PGY 3 - $1200
  • PGY 4 - $1500
