Residency in Ophthalmology at Northwell Health

Letter from the director

Dear Residency Program Candidate:

The Ophthalmology program at Northwell Health is a three-year residency that follows internship. The program has a presence at four of the Northwell Health facilities (North Shore University Hospital, Syosset Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, and the Manhattan Eye and Ear Infirmary), as well as a significant presence at Queens Hospital Center (part of the New York City's Health Hospital Corporation).

Continuing medical education and providing service to the community is at the core of our mission. In addition to residency training, we are proud of our association with the Lions Clubs of Long Island and Queens as well as the Lions Eye Bank for Long Island. We are also committed to the education of our physicians through our Regularly Scheduled Conference Program (formerly called "Grand Rounds,") that also includes numerous visiting professorships from nationally and internationally recognized leaders in ophthalmology. The department members are active in clinical and laboratory research. Our program will continue to be in the vanguard of surgical education through the use of wet labs and the VR-magic EyeSi cataract simulator. We provide didactic teaching for our residents through a series of lectures, conferences and board review courses.

The Northwell Health environment fosters a culture that enables the professional education and personal growth of our residents. Resident training occurs primarily at our outpatient offices in Great Neck and at the Queens Hospital Center, where full-time resident clinics are staffed by a combination of full-time and voluntary attending staff. Residents are encouraged and enabled to rotate through the private offices of some of our voluntary staff as well as the faculty practice at the Manhattan Eye and Ear Infirmary. The majority of surgical experience is obtained at Syosset Hospital and the Queens Hospital Center. Ocular trauma cases referred from a robust trauma network receive care at all of our facilities.

The Department has 11 full-time ophthalmologists. In addition, we have over 140 active, committed, and engaged voluntary staff in all subspecialties who contribute significantly to our educational efforts. Our academic affiliation is with the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

I hope that this brief description encourages you to further pursue your interest in our residency training program. We welcome any questions or inquiries.

Sincerely,

Jules A. Winokur, MD
