Residency in General Surgery at North Shore University Hospital & Long Island Jewish Medical Center (NS/LIJ)
Northwell Health is a system of 22 hospitals spread across New York City, Long Island and Westchester County. The system maintains 120 residency and fellowship programs—including three ACGME-approved general surgical residencies. Additionally, the health system offers comprehensive post-graduate training opportunities in colorectal surgery, vascular surgery, critical care surgery, minimally invasive surgery, cardiothoracic surgery and pediatric surgery.
Residents in the general surgery program at Northwell Health have a unique opportunity to experience providing surgical care for an extremely diverse patient population. The residency program is split among two tertiary hospitals—Long Island Jewish Medical Center and North Shore University Hospital, as well as a dedicated pediatric hospital—Cohen Children’s Medical Center. Both tertiary hospitals have new women’s hospitals to offer comprehensive surgical care to women throughout their life cycle.
Residents also get to rotate through our ambulatory surgery centers, including the Center for Advanced Medicine, which offers complex oncologic care. Residents also train in the surgical simulation program at the Bioskills Education Center which has a robust faculty led cadaver skills curriculum.
