Health care is changing. The general surgery residency program at Northwell Health helps prepare our trainees for the significant changes in the delivery of health care. The program helps trainees develop and sharpen skills that are vital for success and better patient outcomes by providing a diverse and thorough education: structured lectures on healthcare policy, hands-on training in surgical suites and noninvasive laboratories, practice management training and mentorship.

Northwell Health offers a five year categorical general surgery residency program. The residents share their rotations between Long Island Jewish Medical Center (and co-located Cohen Children’s Medical Center) in New Hyde Park and North Shore University Hospital just 2 miles away in Manhasset. Residents also do a rotation in the burn unit at Staten Island University Hospital and a monthlong rotation in trauma at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

Residents from the integrated cardiovascular and plastic surgery programs also rotate on the general surgery service. There are a significant number of both designated and non designated preliminary residents in the first two years of training. Special features of the program include:

  • Simulation-based, minimally invasive surgical training
  • Option to pursue basic science research at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research or elsewhere
  • Option to apply for the Elmezzi School of Molecular Medicine (combined PhD and research period)
