Medical training is a period of rigorous development. Striking a balance between between your personal and professional responsibilities is essential to your success. We encourage residents to take advantage of the many free and low cost events in New York City and Long Island, such as apple picking on Long Island or stopping by a street festival in the city.

Southside Hospital is located in Bay Shore, NY, on the South Shore of Long Island, which is home to fabulous beaches (the ferry to Fire Island leaves from Bay Shore) and various venues offer local sports events and musical concerts and shows, including the Boulton Center, Jones Beach Theater, Nassau Coliseum, Westbury Music Fair. Bay Shore is a suburban community. Though there is public transportation, access to a motor vehicle is recommended. New York City is accessible by regional rail.

The family medicine residency program also offers a variety of activities for residents to unwind and improve their experiences, including:

  • July and January team building sessions
  • Oct/Nov Family Medicine Academic Day
  • December holiday party
  • June graduation party

Our training program is also committed to providing you with a number of academic opportunities paid for by the program. The program will pay your expenses to present scholarly work at conferences and provide leave for educational meetings and conferences.

Housing, salary & benefits

The residency program at Southside Hospital does not offer on-campus housing. However, residents accepted into the program can contact Margaret Manzari for assistances in finding housing. If you choose to find housing on your own, there are a number of free apartment finding services, including Zillow and Trulia, as well as local real estate agents.

Past graduates

Northwell Health has an extensive alumni network. Our past graduates serve as a resource to current trainees for educational development as well as career assistance. Following graduation, our trainees have gone on to a number of areas within their chosen specialty, including private practice, ambulatory medicine, hospital medicine, academics, administration, global health, nursing home care, etc. Some of our graduates have gone onto one of the several fellowship programs available to family medicine physicians : sports medicine, hospice & palliative care, adolescent medicine, sleep medicine, geriatrics, integrative medicine, to name a few. Our goal is to train our residents to be the best family physicians capable of practicing in whichever career they eventually choose.
