Residency in Emergency Medicine at Southside Hospital

Welcome message from the chair

Welcome to Southside! We are very excited and very much looking forward to accepting our inaugural residency class in Emergency Medicine beginning July, 2019. We are accredited by the American Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) as a three-year program.

While our residency may be new, our experience with graduate medical education and residency training spans decades. We are part of the Northwell Health system and a teaching affiliate of the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. The health system has decades of experience training and educating residents and fellows across all specialties. We therefore already have the infrastructure in place to successfully train the next generation of emergency physicians. Our departmental and program leadership also has more than 110 years of combined experience in graduate medical education. Your core faculty has an impressive resume of research and publications, and is made up of physicians with fellowship training in pediatrics, ultrasound and critical care.

The Emergency Department at Southside Hospital has an annual census of more than 72,000 patients, with a significant number of high acuity patients. Our newly expanded Emergency Department has over 55,000 square feet of clinical space, which includes a dedicated observation unit, a 64-slice CAT scanner, two X-ray suites, a dedicated behavioral health space, seven critical care beds, and a two-bed trauma unit. The department has American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) and American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine (AOBEM) certified or eligible attendings. We have well-trained ancillary and clinical support staff for our high volume, high acuity Emergency Department.

Southside Hospital is the tertiary referral center for Northwell Health's eastern Long Island region and receives transfers of patients from community hospitals throughout the area. The department is an American College of Surgeons Level-II trauma center, with in-house trauma surgeons 24 hours a day. Our hospital is recognized by the American Heart Association as Gold awarded STEMI institution, with 24-hour cardiac catheterization lab availability. We are also recognized by the American Heart Association and received the Gold-Plus Quality Achievement Award and Stroke Elite-Plus Honor Roll Award for our stroke care. Our hospital has comprehensive cardiology and cardiothoracic services, as well as orthopedics, women's health and neurosurgical services. We additionally receive patients from the Northwell Imbert Cancer Center and transfers from community hospitals throughout Long Island.

The Emergency Medicine faculty at Southside Hospital provides the medical director supervision for the voluntary ambulance agencies surrounding our hospital. Northwell Health also has the Center for Emergency Medical Services, which provides transportation between our network of 24 hospitals. The Emergency Medicine residents will have educational opportunity and experiences from our complex and broad range of patients and patient services at Southside Hospital.

Residencies in emergency medicine are designed to prepare physicians for the practice of emergency medicine. These programs must teach the fundamental skills, knowledge and humanistic qualities that constitute the foundations of emergency medicine practice, and provide progressive responsibility for and experience in the application of these principles to enable effective management of clinical problems. Equal opportunity must be provided for the residents, under the guidance and supervision of a qualified faculty, to develop a satisfactory level of clinical maturity, judgment and technical skill. On completion of the program, residents will be capable of practicing emergency medicine, able to incorporate new skills and knowledge during their careers, and able to monitor their own physical and mental well-being and that of others.

We look forward to welcoming you to Southside Hospital!

Our emergency departments offer board-certified emergency medicine physicians equipped to diagnose and treat a wide range of injuries.
