Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery at Staten Island University Hospital

The State Island University Hospital Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship is a one-year program. It is designed to offer an opportunity to gain both technical skills and knowledge in advanced laparoscopic surgery. This occurs through direct clinical activity, education, and involvement in scholarly research activity. The fellow is involved in the work-up and management of patients requiring gastrointestinal, endocrine, colorectal and obesity surgery.

The fellow is involved in general surgery resident training. This includes involvement in the MIS skill training labs as well as developing presentations for resident education. Clinical research is also an integral part of the program. The fellowship does include some exposure to basic flexible endoscopy. Current time distribution is: 70 percent clinical work, 20 percent educational activities, and 10 percent research.
