Fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at North Shore University Hospital & Long Island Jewish Medical Center (NS/LIJ)

We are pleased and excited to tell you about our training program and trust that it will fulfill the needs of young physicians interested in pursuing an intellectually and stimulating career in maternal-fetal medicine.
It is the goal of the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine of Northwell Health to train fellows for careers in academic medicine and in the skills necessary to function as independent consultants in maternal-fetal medicine. These goals are achieved through a series of didactic lectures and conferences, extensive clinical experience and a broad range of clinical and basic science research opportunities. Fellows will become adept at procedures integral to the practice of maternal-fetal medicine, including targeted ultrasound, chorionic villlus sampling, fetal echocardiography, cordocentesis and fetal transfusion.
The health system, through its affiliate hospitals, is responsible for approximately 30,000 deliveries annually, with almost 14,000 at the two tertiary centers. At each tertiary institution yearly, there are over 80 maternal transports, and at each site over 40,000 obstetrical ultrasounds and prenatal procedures are performed. Rotations are offered in genetics, medical intensive care, obstetrical anesthesia and neonatology (at Cohen Children's Medical Center, a tertiary care, 154-bed children's hospital).
Fellows will have the opportunity to pursue either clinical or basic science scholarly research under the tutelage of mentors experienced in clinical or basic science research, available on campus at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. The Institute ranks in the top 6 percent of independent research institutions funded by the National Institutes of Health. For those interested in further training in basic science research, there is availability for the pursuit of a PhD. There is also an opportunity to pursue a Masters in Public Health or a Certificate in Medical Ethics

Recognizing that this need can exist, the Graduate Medical Education Committee of our institution has established the following policy for resident and fellow participation in sanctioned moonlighting:
Only fellows who have been pre-approved for sanctioned moonlighting by their Fellowship Director/Department Chairman are eligible and may choose to participate in such arrangements. Approval and oversight of sanctioned moonlighting must be in compliance with New York State 405 Regulations, ACGME Institutional and Program Requirements, and institutional policies pertinent to resident duty hours and supervision. Fellows who are eligible to participate in sanctioned moonlighting must complete the Moonlighting Inventory Form and file it with the Program Director.
The Fellowship Director must approve any leave of absence in advance. No leave of absence will extend the term of this agreement beyond its original term without the prior express written approval of the Fellowship Director. All time away from formal graduate medical education, other than scheduled vacation, may lead to a shortfall in the time needed to complete the requirements of both the residency program and the respective specialty board. In such situations, additional months of training may be necessary. As per the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology regulations, the fellow must complete 32 out of 36 months during the fellowship period.
