Fellowship in Brain Injury Medicine at North Shore University Hospital & Long Island Jewish Medical Center (NS/LIJ)

The Northwell Health Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation offers a one year ACGME accredited brain injury medicine fellowship program. The brain injury medicine fellow will receive training that encompasses the continuum of care for brain injury within the Northwell Health System.

The clinical experience will comprise of:

Acute inpatient rehabilitation

  • 25-bed newly renovated brain injury/neurorehabilitation unit

Acute care/trauma consultations 

  • Work collaboratively with acute care surgery/trauma and neurosurgery teams on rounds and conferences; observe operative procedures
  • Provide immediate brain injury care from the start of the injury and follow through hospital stay with direct management of cases

Outpatient brain injury rehabilitation

  • Wide spectrum of brain injury management and continuity of care
  • Interdisciplinary team conferences with clinical team members
  • Spasticity management with chemodenervation and intrathecal baclofen

Outpatient Concussion Program

  • A systemwide program that provides advanced concussion management and treatment in alignment with current evidence-based guidelines, targeting both athletic and non-athletic populations. Under the direction of physicians, medical care and rehabilitation services are provided to the community with early access for enhanced return to performance and quality of life
  • Be a part of the ongoing development and administrative aspects of the program, including education and community outreach in schools as well as coordinating the annual brain injury conference

Vestibular rehabilitation

  • Work side by side with expert vestibular therapists to understand balance physiology
  • Houses the Bertec Balance Advantage™ system—the only one in New York City and Long Island

Research

  • Fulfill training using CITI to be involved in IRB process and protocol development
  • Implement research project at start of year with dedicated time to research provided by research mentor with resultant publication expected at completion

Teaching will be compised of dedicated faculty which includes four  BIM Board Certified PMR Physicians. In addition, Neurology, Neuroradiology, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology and Acute Care Surgery/Trauma will also be part of direct teaching.
