Overview

The program leadership views the balance between professional and personal life as relevant and essential to success as a physician. The New York metropolitan area offers an abundance of opportunities to explore fine dining, the arts, as well as the outdoors. The main campus for the dermatology program is located approximately 20 miles outside of Manhattan and well-positioned for access to the boroughs as well as the beaches and vineyards on Long Island.

Housing, salary, & benefits

Housing

Northwell Health owns garden-apartment style housing units on the campuses of North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center which are available for rent at subsidized cost. On the occasion of there being more applicants than apartments available, housing is allocated on a lottery basis. Residents who are not assigned housing through the lottery are offered an additional monthly stipend to help defray the cost of housing.

Benefits

The institution offers a highly competitive benefits program. Members of the house staff have a choice of plans under medical, dental, vision, supplemental short-term disability, long-term disability, supplemental life insurance/accidental death and dismemberment, and flexible spending accounts. All plans are eligible on the first date of employment, and the cost of coverage is largely employer-subsidized. In addition, the following disability programs are provided:

  • Employer-paid Basic Life Insurance/AD&D at 1½ times pay up to $500,000
  • Salary continuation during disability for up to 12 weeks and 50 percent Short-Term Disability thereafter at no cost to the employee
  • 60 percent Long-Term Disability provided at no cost to the employee

House staff are entitled to 20 days of paid time off (PTO) each contract year. These 20 days must be used during the period covered by the contract and may not be carried into subsequent years. To learn more about benefits offered, download our resident resource guide.
