We're educating the leaders of tomorrow
Each year, our department trains more than 230 medical students, 120 residents and 110 fellows. Many of our faculty members also teach at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, which is redefining medical education.

Transforming medicine through exceptional training

We currently offer four internal medicine residency programs and more than a dozen fellowship programs that provide comprehensive training with a focus on clinical competence, research, leadership and patient-centered care, all in a supportive, collegial setting. As a part of Northwell Health, one of the nation's largest health systems, we have unparalleled resources to bolster training, including a world-class research institute and an innovative medical school.

We followed first-year medical student Tamara, as she tackles labs, lectures, clinical internships and more. "Everything we learn is important," she says, "and the stakes are high because we will be directly responsible for the health and lives of our patients."

Our recent grads secured spots in many of the most sought-after residency programs in the country, including placements within 15 different states and 22 specialty areas.

A wide range of fellowship programs

Northwell Health sponsors more than 1,400 post-graduate training programs in all areas of medicine. The majority of the training takes place at our two tertiary campuses: North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center. We currently have more than a dozen fellowship programs and more than 110 fellowship positions.

We merged the fellowship programs of both tertiary institutions, strengthening the training of each individual fellowship with varied populations and a greater spectrum of pathology. Strong clinical training programs are offered, with many opportunities for clinical research as well as basic science research, depending on the particular subspecialty.

Our fellows integrate the latest learning technologies; we are one of the first teaching institutions to embrace and leverage social media both in the classroom and online. Our students also benefit from an innovative rotation schedule, which lets them follow a patient’s progress more continuously. At our Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, they have access to many well-funded NIH research projects, as well as mentorships with world-renowned leaders in clinical care and medical research.

The application process begins in June. All applications are entered via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)
