North Shore University Hospital, Northwell Health trains professional chaplains by offering clinical pastoral education recognized by the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE).

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)

CPE offers an action/reflection/new action model of learning. CPE students actively visit patients, family and staff and reflect on that experience in a structured learning environment.

Program offerings

  • CPE residency—full year, 40 hours/week with stipend and benefits
  • Summer intensive unit—11 weeks, 40 hours/week
  • Fall extended unit—16 weeks, 25 hours/week
  • Spring extended—16 weeks, 25 hours/week

  • Palliative care (certified by the Joint Commission)
  • Rehabilitative medicine and long-term care
  • Women’s health
  • Simulation lab learning (residents and staff)
  • Regional Level 1 Trauma Center
  • Cushing Institute for Neurology and Neurosurgery
  • Stroke Center certification by the Joint Commission

How to apply

Applicants must complete the standard ACPE application which is available here.

Requirements include:

  • Completed ACPE application
  • Completion of one-year theological education or its equivalent
  • One-time $50 application fee
  • Admissions interview

Tuition is $850 per unit.

Annual notice

This ACPE CPE center/program guarantees its students the rights to inspect and review education records, to seek to amend them, to specified control over the release of record information, and to file a complaint against the program for alleged violations of these Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) rights.

A student has the right to object to record content. If not negotiable, the written objection will be kept with and released with the record. Grades are exempted from this right.

Violations of these protocols may be reported to the Chair of the Accreditation Commission at ACPE, 1 West Court Square, Suite #325, Decatur, GA 30030.
