Overview

To guide learners in best practices, the Center for Learning and Innovation uses hands-on, interactive programs, including simulations, games, reflective debriefing, interactive technology, role-playing and group activities. 

Beginnings

As part of the organization's onboarding program, the Center for Learning and Innovation conducts Beginnings, a daylong experience for all newly hired employees and physicians. Beginnings is designed to immerse new employees in Northwell Health’s culture and create an immediate, strong connection. Intended to build a team dedicated to transforming care through carrying out Northwell’s mission, vision, values and expectations, Beginnings welcomes and inspires its workforce for excellence.
 
Reflecting the centrality of Beginnings, the weekly program is led by Northwell’s president and CEO Michael Dowling, who welcomes new employees and introduces them to the organization's purpose and culture. It is facilitated by a team of leaders that includes graduates of the High Potential Development Program, who emphasize the role that each team member plays in delivering an exceptional patient experience. Beginnings includes an overview of the tools available to transform participants’ careers, with an in-depth session on performance management and opportunities for professional development. Attendees also receive information on benefits, including wellness programs and other Northwell resources designed to help maintain work-life balance.

Physician Beginnings is a specialized orientation program created for physicians entering the health system. Held monthly, it follows much the same outline as the traditional Beginning’s program; however, senior medical leadership and physician recruitment services join Mr. Dowling in facilitating this session, along with representatives of CLI. Participants receive an overview of the organization and learn about the dashboard by which success is measured. Emphasis is placed on the centrality of physicians in achieving Northwell’s goals through their commitment to patients, providing excellent quality of care and giving exceptional service.
 

Enrichment courses

Because Northwell believes that employees are the organization’s greatest asset, CLI offers a multitude of enrichment courses designed to promote professional and personal development. These include classes on such disparate topics as active listening, communication skills, time management for business professionals and Microsoft Excel. Each year, new enrichment courses are added to meet the needs of employees and the goals of the organization.
