The Lenox Hill Hospital School of Nursing

The German Hospital Training School for Nurses was established in 1887. The first graduating class in 1888 had only 4 students. In 1894, a school building was completed and the class size was increased to 40. By 1917, the Achelis building housed 80 students. In 1918, the hospital changed its name and the training school became the Lenox Hill Hospital School of Nursing. Eighty five years and more than 3,000 graduates later, the Lenox Hill Hospital School of Nursing closed after "The Last of the Best" graduated in 1973.

The Alumnae Association was established in 1899. It has been, and continues to be, an active association for the benefit of the graduates of the Lenox Hill Hospital School of Nursing, with meetings in May and December. The Association encourages alumnae members to attend and participate in meetings. The Lenox Hill Hospital School of Nursing Needy Sick Nurse Fund assists alumnae members when they become sick and or needy. Alumnae dues must be paid every year until a member is awarded honor status.

The alumnae published the first Alumnae Quarterly Echo in 1912, which is currently published twice a year. It contains information and pictures about our gala, class reunions, board members, current and deceased alumnae members, forms needed to donate or apply for assistance, and up-to-date education for our members.

Our graduates have a distinguished record of serving our patients in the United States and around the world. Many of our graduates have earned advanced degrees, including Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorates. Our nurses served with honor and received medals for their service in WWI, WWII and the wars that followed.

The Lenox Hill Hospital Nurses’ Aid Society

In the year 1894, a group of nurses in training, in the then German Hospital, created a fund which was named “Krankenkasse”, the purpose of which was to aid nurses while ill. In 1910, the name was changed to the Nurses’ Aid Society. Since its incorporation the Society has functioned to assist our nurses with medical expenses. Membership is open to LHH graduate nurses and nurses who worked at LHH for at least 5 years before new non Alumnae membership was closed in December 2016. Dues must be paid every year. Meetinga are held twice a year on the same schedule as the Alumnae meetings.

We encourage all Alumnae members to maintain membership in both the Alumnae and Nurse’s Aid Society.
